Miracle Cure for Your Joints?
By Stacy Sims, M.S.
What are Glucosamine & Chondroitin?
Glucosamine is a natural substance found abundantly in the human body. It functions as a
precursor for the growth of cartilage, provides lubrication for the joints and helps
reduce pain and inflammation. Glucosamine's primary role in halting or reversing joint
degeneration is directly related to its ability to stimulate the production of
substances that are used to build cartilage.
Another naturally occurring substance in your body is chondroitin. It boosts the synthesis of
cartilage, helps lubricate the joints and, most importantly, blocks the enzymes that
break down cartilage. Chondroitin helps create a watery, shock-absorbing space within
the cartilage tissue, which provides cushioning between the bones as you run.
Can They Protect and Rebuild Your Joints? Recent studies have determined that glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate (both are bound to sulfate in supplement form) can effectively control pain and slow down or even reverse the degeneration of cartilage. An eight-week study of 48 patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee compared the effects of using glucosamine versus ibuprofen for pain management and inflammation. Researchers found that the ibuprofen group experienced no change in pain levels, whereas the glucosamine group exhibited a significant reduction in pain as well as reduced joint inflammation. Most importantly, using MRI technology, researchers found that the glucosamine subjects showed evidence of cartilage regeneration. The body was actually building new cartilage in these patients! Two similar studies found that glucosamine/chondroitin supplementation significantly reduces pain and inflammation and rebuilds cartilage. Furthermore, it appears that glucosamine and chondroitin selectively target damaged cartilage, thus having a direct effect where it's most needed. To date, there have been no reports of any side effects, although most studies have been limited to three months or less. While many alternative health specialists and supplement manufacturers are convinced of the benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin, not everyone is ready to jump on the bandwagon. The more conservative wing of conventional medicine and research science contends that while the initial studies are encouraging, there needs to be much more research before they can be satisfied that supplementing with glucosamine/chondroitin really works. Conclusions While we await further research, particularly long-term studies, the evidence so far is positive. Given that there are no reported side effects, if you currently have joint problems or feel you're at risk for them, these supplements may be worthwhile to help reduce pain and rebuild your joints. |
